OUTLOOK 2003- IMAP/JES (WIN)

Using Outlook 2003 for JES

  1. Open Outlook. (If the setup wizard opens, the information that you will need to enter will be displayed within the following text.) If the wizard does not open, go to Tools and then Email Accounts.
  2. From this window, select Add a New Email Account. Click Next



  3. Choose IMAP. Click Next.



  4. User information. Fill in your user information appropriately. Under Logon information, your will enter your FSUID username and password. If you want Outlook to remember your password, check the Remember Password box. Server Information. Your incoming mail server will be imap.fsu.edu and Outgoing mail server will be smtp.fsu.edu. Once you completed filling in this information, click on the button "More Settings..."




  5. Click on the Outgoing server tab and check "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication". Check "Log on using" Your FSUID username and password should be fill in the text box.

6. Place a check in the This Server Requires a Secure Connection box under the Incoming Server (IMAP) and Outgoing Server. This will change the number to the Incoming Server to 993 and Outgoing server to 25. Click ok.

You can use port 25, 465 or 587. They all work the same and all need TLS. ( Sometimes 25 is blocked at the Windows Firewall or in Norton or McAfee)

7. You will be sent back to the Email accounts page, then click Next.

8. Then click Finished.

***Note: Some users using Outlook 2003 may get an SSL error when connecting to smtp.fsu.edu and they will have SSL turned on for the SMTP connection. UCS and the Help Desk recommends following these steps to resolve the problem:

  1. Go to the Internet e-mail settings indicated in Step #6, if your Outlook client is open, go to "Tools", then "Options" to open the Options dialog box
  2. Go under the tab "Mail Setup" and click on the button "Email Accounts", this will take you to the Email accounts Wizard as shown in Step #1. You will click on the check box "View or change existing Email accounts" then click "Next"
  3. Email Accounts dialog box will open, highlight IMAP account and then click "Change". When the IMAP setting dialog box appears click the button "More Settings" to see the the Internet e-mail settings dialog box, Click on the tab "Advanced" to see the settings as shown in Step #6
  4. Under "Outgoing Server" Uncheck "This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)", then click Apply and OK
  5. Try to send (they will get another error about needing to STARTTLS)
  6. Repeat the steps as indicated in these instructions to return to the Internet e-mail Settings Dialog box, and again check "This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)" then click Apply and OK
